Ms Action 5 1/2:
I had to look some of these up to figure out what she was talking about.
Ms Pooky skinned her knee and spent a good deal of time
weeping and wailing while I explained that they used up all the band-aids for
teddy bear owies and now there were none left for real owies. She seemed to be
accepting this, and wandered off sniffling. I heard Ms Action
clucking and fussing over her “O you poor thing, you have a hurt knee, lets
find you a band-aid.” I decided not to interfere
since Ms Pooky can always use more sympathy, but a few minutes later she strutted
out of the hallway with a wax strip placed directly over the owie! Luckily it
came off without too much pain, leaving a coat of stickiness behind.
Ms Drama 4 1/2:
She really loves having me all to herself, and I think she
is going to like when her older sister is in school for part of each day and it
gets easier to do things together without another sibling. Her and Ms Action
tend to be joined at the hip when they are home together.
She is a very perceptive child, she can tell what the mood is in the house, even if it is unspoken. She can usually pinpoint how people are feeling and she is not afraid to talk about it. Sometimes she surprises me with how spot on she is with her random interpretations of stuff in the news or just her observations of the politics of being a grown up.
Ms Pooky almost 3:
Still refuses to be potty trained. She loves to play a game
called “Grumpy Old Troll” when we are at the park, which is based on the story
of the Billy Goats Gruff. She crawls under something and orders someone to “be
the billy goat” and stomp on top of whatever play structure she is underneath,
and then she comes lumbering out saying in a deep voice “I’m the Grumpy Old Troll and I gonna
come up and SCARE you” (Yes, I did edit the story a bit from “Eat you” to “Scare
you”) and then you must persuade her to scare someone else. Sometimes
she likes being the billy goat instead, but her decided favorite is the role of
the troll, and if we are near anything that could be seen as a bridge of some
kind, she will usually suggest the Grumpy Old Troll Game.
The other day I had just finished putting together a ham and bean soup with the help of Ms Pooky, after wards I sat down at the computer while Ms Pooky played on the floor next to me and the smells of the simmering soup filled the room. After a few minutes I was sure I was smelling parmesan cheese, but I dismissed it because that made no sense, there was no parmesan cheese in the soup. I continued surfing the web for a few more minutes while chatting with Ms Pooky, when I suddenly realized that she was shaking parmesan cheese all over the shoes inside the shoe bucket!
Mr Punk 1:
Mr Punk is still super snuggly, and lately has been booting
people off my lap to make more room for himself. He and Ms Pooky have this game of
running wildly around the house shrieking with laughter which is probably the
most adorable thing I have ever seen.
He completely detests his bath. He has never liked it, but I
thought he would grow out of it like his sister who didn’t like her bath.
Instead he just seems to hate it even more. Whether I put him in the tub alone
or with a sibling, with toys or without, it doesn’t seem to matter. I have even
gotten in the tub with him and it didn’t help. I can’t remember him ever having
a traumatic experience with water, but he seems to be afraid of it. Thus baths
usually consist of me stripping him while he leans over the edge of the tub to
splash the water with his hands excitedly, after he realizes I am actually going
to put him in the tub he begins shrieking and climbing up my body. I put him in
the water where he stands rigidly and screams while I wash him as fast as
possible. Needless to say, he doesn’t get bathed as often as his sisters. Anybody
have some tips for making bath time more peaceful?
For Mr. Punk - have you tried a shower instead? Maybe having water run over him (instead of, I don't know, grabbing him the way water does when you stand in it) would be more palatable?
ReplyDeleteYour kids sound completely adorable. We only have the two boys, but they're a lot of fun - and as they're getting older, I'm particularly enjoying watching them start to play with each other.
Would Mr. Punk prefer a shower perhaps? If he likes rain, maybe that could translate into showers with a parent. Or a hand-held shower head to only spray the body ( and rinse the hair while standing with head back and a face cloth to keep water off the face?
ReplyDeleteBath time. Yeah. Put a few drops of food coloring in the water. Change colors the next time.
ReplyDeleteParmesan cheese! *wipes tears*
ReplyDeleteI second the shower. My oldest didn't like baths, and when we had mommy and me swimming, he would climb onto the top of my head. Showering helped, and also some of those soap crayons. He's 15 now and showering all the time.
ReplyDeleteYour kids sound so incredibly adorable. And I love Ms. Action's obsession with cars - you're lucky, it sounds detailed enough that she could help you with future purchases :)
ReplyDeleteMr. Punk reminds me of my youngest brother, who also hated, HATED baths. Once we were on holiday in a flat where the bathroom door didn't close, and suddenly we hear this ear-splitting scream, of the "URGENT I have broken every bone in my body THIS IS NOT A DRILL" kind, and we all run to him in panic... turns out he'd seen one of his older brothers taking a bath. It was apparently the most horrific sight he'd ever been subjected to, we couldn't even drag him away he was so fixated on it. (and of course said older brother didn't help, purposefully dipping his head under the water and so on...)
So, yeah, little kids and water am I right ? He eventually grew out of it but I can't remember when.
I don't know about showers, I know I remembered hating them as a child. At the end of the day anything that gets large quantities of water near your head is going to be scary. But aside from sponge baths there aren't that many other options.
Maybe take inspiration from those desensitization excercises for PTSD - like have him play in a half-centimeter of water, then up it to a centimeter (under supervision of course, kids can drown in a molecule of water and all that jazz) and so on ? Or have him bathe with his sisters so he can see they aren't scared ? (with the caveat of, well, see how *that* worked out with my brother...)
(these are completely off-the-top-of-my-head uninformed opinions, sorry)
Popsicles! I have a friend who swears by this... give the cranky kid who doesn't like baths the choice of which color they want while they're in the tub washing up. Notice the emphasis on 'which color' and not 'how would you like to have a bath now?" They get to eat a messy treat, and get washed up while they're distracted. They can even watch the dribbly juice change the color of the bath water if there's enough.
ReplyDeleteOh, I like the popsicle idea!
Delete"To which Ms Action replied solemnly “Mom, that’s your job.” So true kid!" They start so young. It only gets worse as they get older and their grasp of language and concepts gets better lol! They are so much fun when they can clearly express what they are thinking.
ReplyDeleteYou are not alone with the editing of stories. I have two that get scared easily and/or repeat everything they hear, so I make the executive decision that some things will wait until they get older :D
Don't worry about the potty training. All mine were 3-3.5 before they were on board. I didn't push, but I was relieved when I didn't have to add diapers to the grocery list (for awhile anyway)
Parmesan cheese is so much fun to shake! It sticks together sometimes, so you don't always know if you are going to get a little or a lot. And over a bucket? I can just see her: Mom and sister made a soup. I'll make a soup too! Ha Ha! If I turn my back my last two, I usually find an interesting mess awaiting my return. Yesterday's was kool-aid, but they forgot to add the sugar and were wondering how long they had to stir to make it sweet!
Okay, this may sound nuts, but do you think your little boy would like a bath outside? My boys were always crazy about water while outside, but didn't like it inside in the tub. So, I brought the bar of soap outside and washed them up using a hose and sprinkler that they ran in to wash it off. Then you just have to clean up feet. Eventually, they moved inside and had just as much fun with bubble baths. We were out in the country, though. Not sure if that would make your neighbors look at you a little funny :)
Lol at all of this! I can only suggest bubble bath; hey, what can I say, some kids love their dirt! One thing Hunter enjoys, though, is putting a "beard" of bubble bath on and pretending to be Santa Claus. It's hilarious because he has such a round face that he makes a great Santa imitation. :)
ReplyDeleteMy daughter decided she liked baths only after a trip to the big swimming pool. You might also try putting him in the shower with you.
ReplyDeleteYour kid stories are great!!!!
ReplyDeleteI used to let my kids (two) paint themselves with cheap water color paint (in those sets of 6 colors or so) and then get in the bath. They had such fun though sometimes it took a couple of days to get all the paint off. We didn't do this every day. They always looked very 'tribal' after they had painted themselves. They would then climb in the tub and giggle with glee at the spectacle they had made of themselves.
We also did the food coloring thing and occasional shaving cream or canned whipped cream can be used, too, to add variety to what they decorate themselves with before getting in the tub.
"She loves to play a game called “Grumpy Old Troll” when we are at the park, which is based on the story of the Billy Goats Gruff" -- beware! I played this game once when I was little, and the other kid (playing the goat) ignored me and kept walking back and forth across the bridge. So I chucked a rock at him and knocked his front teeth out.
ReplyDeleteWorst. Beating. Ever.
